Sometimes in orthodontics it is necessary to place a band or ring around a back tooth e.g.  it is required for numerous orthodontic appliances including expanders like a quadhelix or a hyrax ,  a trans palatal arch ,  space maintainers  and  for headgear, to mention just a few.

Space is necessary between teeth to fit the band/ring around the tooth.

Separators or spacers are placed between the teeth to create space for the orthodontic band/ring. The separators are made of an elastic material. They are placed around the contact area of adjacent teeth. As the elastic separator regains its shape, it slowly and gently creates a small space between adjacent teeth for the orthodontic band/ring.

The separators/spacers are normally left in place between the teeth for 5-7 days. During this time they open up space so the orthodontic bands/rings can be fitted.

Sometimes the separators/spacers cause mild discomfort when they are in place, generally this passes in a short period of time. If necessary over the counter analgesics like paracetomol can be taken if appropriate.  Sometimes the separators fall out  prematurely, if this happen please contact us, and it may or may not be necessaryto have them replaced before you attend for your appointment to have the orthodontic bands fitted.
